The Sorrento Writers Festival and Drift Arts Festival co-present Words & Music, a celebration of the magic that happens when wonderful lyrics connect with beautiful music.
Our evening begins with Part I: Singer, songwriter, musician and producer Rebecca Barnard performs Songs of Joni Mitchell with musician Peter Farnan. Rebecca was 14 when she first fell in love with the music of Canadian-American singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. Declared by 'Rolling Ston' magazine as "one of the greatest songwriters ever", Joni Mitchell's music covers a range of styles - "from wistful acoustic folk to complex jazz pop and beyond" ('Rolling Stone') - and her lyrics continue to pack a punch decades after the songs were first recorded.
Part 2 of our Words & Music is an exciting preview of _Stella: The Miles Franklin Story, _a musical which celebrates the life of Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, one of Australian literature's most important figures. Written by composer, musician, producer and performer Monique diMattina. this extraordinary performance will include a string quartet, a punk bank, and the singing talents of Alma Zygier and Rebecca Barnard. Monique's family are long-time residents of Portsea, and it is a thrill to have her back at the beach with us, and to welcome _Stella _into the world.
